I guess I should have written about this earlier but during the holidays it is always a good idea to watch what you eat especially if you have meniere's.
I haven't been really careful about what I have eaten this holiday season and I think I am paying for it. I don't know if it is the proliferation of candy, especially chocolate, or cookies that I have been eating that has caused me to feel so bad. I know the smart thing would be to just stop eating them but unfortunately the smart thing usually isn't the easy thing to do.
Chocolate seems to be something that brings on attacks from what I have read. I guess it is the caffeine in it that causes it or maybe something else. I can imagine that the sugar in cookies and candies can't be very helpful either. I tell myself to eat in moderation, but you know how that goes.
Another Christmas food that I have to be careful about is baked ham which has a lot of salt in it. Salt really isn't a trigger for me but I don't want to push my luck. I don't eat that much of it so I ought to be okay. And I am careful not to put any salt on anything I eat.
So be careful not to overdo it.
Have a happy Holiday!

I have had several attacks since Thanksgiving and am wondering if it might be too much sugar! The kind of attacks that are knock you on your butt for 18 hrs which are never fun.
Trying to cut it all out for now to see if that helps.
Happy holidays to you

David:
I found your blog today and read your progression through the years. Did you read about or find any connection between allergies and MM? I was diagnosed with MM in 2005. I had symptoms for about a year but then I moved to east coast (from San Diego) and went into spontaneous remission. MM is unpredictable thus I do not know how long the remission will last .The only way I could explain the remission is that the allergens on east coast is different than in So Cal (where something is growing year round).
Sugar definitely can be a problem, at least to me. I won't be surprised if it didn't affect many meniere's patients at Christmas.
I have heard that allergens have a connection with meniere's. It might be a good thing to post about.
thanks everybody for the comments
I am a 33 year old female whose father and grandfather both have Meniere's disease. I had the worst attack yet the day after Christmas. It lasted 16 hours and was the worst case of vertigo that I have had yet where I was feeling nauseous the entire time. I couldn't move a muscle in my body. I could barely move my eyes. It was aweful. It eventually passed and I felt great. Then one month later (exactly) I had another attack. It's only two weeks later and I feel another one coming on. I'm am now on the hunt for a specialist as I am curious about some of the proceedures and surgeries that are offerred. I have a five year old sone that wants to know why I am always in bed "sick". I think there is some connection b/w hormones and the attacks. I was so glad to find your website. It's been informative as I continue on my journey for helpful information. I don't want to live for the next 60 or so years with this aweful disease.
Julie,
I hate to hear about your recent attacks. It is so hard to tell what brings them on. It could be hormones or something else.
As for your son wondering why you are sick, my son who is eight is the same way he can’t understand why I’m sick a lot either. It is really hard for them at such a young age.
I hope that you find a specialist and keep in touch and let me know how you are doing.
