Meniere’s disease and Vinpocetine

Alternative remedies for illnesses and disorders are very popular today, although they may not be popular with the medical industry they are certainly popular with a lot of people. I have written in the past about supplements that I take and continue to take like niacin, and Bioflavonoids and I have also had posts about vertigo heel which I haven’t taken. One natural supplement that I haven’t mentioned is Vinpocetine.

Vinpocetine is a synthetic compound derived from vincamine, which comes from the periwinkle plant (vinca minor). The health benefits from Vinpocetine are supposed to be increased blood circulation in the brain. Some also suggest that it helps the brain’s use of oxygen. Two possible uses for this supplement are for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, although no studies have been done to prove that they are effective against them.

As far as whether it helps with Meniere’s disease, I read in the John of Ohio website that it is used in other parts of the world to fight off vertigo and he also says that it is helpful for tinnitus.

I can’t say one way or the other whether it is helpful. I’m sure that you can buy a supplement that contains it and other natural products that help with Meniere’s disease.  But you need to also talk to your doctor about any possible negative reactions that Vinpocetine may have with other drugs.

I take a supplement every day I believe that it helps along with the other medicine that I take. Keep an open mind when it comes to Meniere’s disease and ways to find relief from it.

I have some experience with vinpocetine. Before I found your site and T-bio (thanks, David!) I printed the John of Ohio regimen and took it to my PCP. She was supportive of trying everything on the list except vinpocetine. Her words, "I wouldn't take it." I went ahead and bought some anyway. I haphazardly introduced it (i.e. giving me no way to know if it or something else was working). Just the same, I think it made me feel weird so I stopped taking it. However, I've been getting some minor brain fog and brief dizziness over the past week so I'm wondering if I should introduce another substance from JOH. I'm only on 3000MG lysine and t-bio daily plus valium as needed. There are 2 or 3 more herbs and some vitamins to the regimen that I'm not taking.

I wonder why she didn't want you to take it? She must have had her reasons, but if it made you feel funny it is probably good that you stopped taking it.
Let me know if you have any luck with any of the other stuff from john of Ohio
thanks
David

Hi David,
I wish I'd written down what my doctor said about vinpocetine. As I recall it had something to do with it being derived from the vinca minor plant which is also used to make a powerful drug for some other dread disease. That's as much as I remember. I also forgot to mention that Vertigo Heel is a compound preparation and only available from a compounding pharmacist but you can get cocculus compositum from Amazon.com that is the same thing but non prescription. It's a bit pricey but I did get some and take it now and again for when I feel swimmy. I think it works. If I feel any worse than swimmy, I bypass it for Valium. Anyway, I haven't yet introduced anything new but I think my next step is to try grapeseed oil which is a new addition to the JOH regimen. Will keep you posted.
