Meniere’s disease and Zofran

After my last attack I wrote a post on finding a quick medication to relieve my meniere’s disease. One of the suggestions was zofran which I had heard of before but I didn’t look into but it certainly seems to help some folks.

Here is part of the email that suggested zofran…

I wonder if you know anti-nausea drug zofran. My ENT doctor prescribed it, and it really works for me. Before I knew this drug, once vertigo started, I used to vomit until my stomach became completely empty. Now, when I feel that it is coming, I take one tablet, and it prevents me from vomiting, though it does not stop vertigo. I still have attacks frequently, but not vomiting is a huge relief.

Zofran is an anti-nausea drug that is used by folks that have just had surgery and it is used by cancer patients after chemo. You are supposed to take the medicine before chemotherapy. I have read that some women take it while they are pregnant to reduce morning sickness. Zofran is taken by pill form or water soluble. Like all drugs there is side effects, make sure to check with your doctor about them.

As far as zofran for Meniere’s disease it sounds pretty effective although I have read that it is more expensive than other medications. Right now the strongest thing that I take for nausea is phenregan and to be frank with you it hasn’t helped that much in the past 2 weeks.

Thanks

Hi David,

I'm the one who posted a comment on zofran the other day. I am glad you became interested. Yes, I know it is pretty expensive. That is a problem with this drug.

Inspired by you and other patients of this disease on line, I started a blog myself. Because the drugs my ENT doctor prescribes alone are not working well, I feel that I should do more research by myself and exchange useful information with other patients. This is why I decided to start the blog.

Thanks,

vertigodog

I have been able to get the generic for a $10 copay. It's not soluble so it won't work if you can't keep anything down but just thought I'd pass that on.

David,
I wanted to write and tell you that I, too, started a blog after being inspired by your words. I don't blog too often and I'm not very confident with my writing yet, but if I can convey some of my Meniere's experiences I feel like it can be helpful both to me or anyone else suffering from this. I thought I was in "remission" or at least, in a non-vertigo stage of this disease. But last week I was a little under the weather and woke up in the middle of the night while going into vertigo. I think I may have had the flu, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I know I'm back in a pattern of dizzyness and nausea so I think I know what you are going through as far as the cycles of this disease. I hadn't had vertigo at all for 17 months and thought I was out of the woods. I'm always looking for more answers because there are always more questions and symptoms, it seems. Thank you again for your great blog.

Sincerely,

Lita

Vertigo dog and Lita,
I think that is great idea about starting a blog it has helped me tremendously. Don't worry about how many visitors you get at the beginning it takes time to build an audience. Let me know when the blogs go live.
