Ear aches and Meniere’s disease

When I was young I used to get the ear ache all the time. My parents took me to the doctor and he would prescribe some ear drops that would usually do the trick. I don’t know if that has anything to do with my present condition of Meniere’s disease, but it worth noting. And as I have written before I had also a problem with car sickness, or motion sickness, did that have anything to do with the ear aches, its something else I’m not sure about.

What causes ear aches?

You probably have heard about the Eustachian tube, it connects the middle ear with the back part of the nose. Its function is to drain fluid out of the middle ear. (If you have had gent injections the Eustachian tube carried the gentamicin out of the ear after the injections. It is not pleasant.) When this tube becomes infected and swollen with bacteria mucus blocks the tube from draining properly. This causes the terrible pain of an ear ache. Unfortunately children seem to get ear aches a lot as they grow up. Medications can clear up this problem in about a week. And as I remember when I was a kid it was a very long week.

I find it interesting that children with allergy problems and frequent nasal congestion are prone to get ear aches. I can’t say for certain if all this leads to Meniere’s disease but considering all my ear problems as a child I have to wonder.

hey david,
have you ever considered migraine associated vertigo? i mention it for a couple of reasons. you said you had problems with car sickness as a child, that's common in people with mav. also, people with meniere's are more likely to go on to develop mav than the general population. my oto now thinks i have it as well. you don't have to necessarily have migraine pain to have it. it can manifest itself in many ways. for me, it's with bad neck pain and pain in my good ear (or so it seems for now.)

also, i don't know how to contact you privately but have some concerns about things going on with our blogs. don't want to post it here because i may be entirely wrong. is there a button to click on your page that would allow me to send you a private message?

or, can i post it as a separate comment and you can choose not to "approve" it so it doesn't get seen by anyone else??

thanks. hope things are improving daily for you.

David, Hi and thank you for having this site. I find it extremely helpful to hear about the experiences of others. I have a question about gentamycin injections. I've had 2 injections one week apart. With the first injection I did not have any side effects, but with the 2nd injections I had some real balance issue side effects. Luckily I called my mother and she was able to come stay with me. I was extremely off balance and could not do anything except lay as still as possible with my eyes closed. This started 5 days after my second injections and lasted for 7 days. Today being the 8th day, I'm moving around more, much more stable with my walking, although still very swimmy-headed if I move my head (prefer to look straight ahead) and not nearly as dizzy feeling as before. My question is this. It will be 2 weeks since my last injection, if I have a 3rd injection will the extreme imbalance come back again after this next injection, just as it did before? Will I have another full week of so of being completely incapacitated or or does the body develop some amount of resistance? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Dawn,
With my first series of gent injections I really didn't have any balance problems till after the last shot. With the shot series this summer I started to have problems with my balance after the second shot.
It is really hard to say because everyone is different.
