Meniere’s Disease and the Neti Pot

As many of you know I also have problems with sleep apnea, which continually wakes me up at night. Right now I just living with it till I have more time to deal with it. I have tried the CPAP mask and I haven’t been able to get used to it. Anyway I have come across a lot of interesting ways to help relieve the sleep apnea and one of those is to use a neti pot which helps flush nasal congestion. I never tried it but I received a comment from someone who has meniere’s and who has used it.

Here is part of the comment from Lita...

“My very first vertigo episode took place less than 4 hours after using a Neti Pot, which is a nasal flush. Interesting that I never had vertigo until I created intense water generated pressure in my head, although I resorted to the Neti pot when nothing seemed to relieve cold symptoms I was having at the time. Seems the Neti pot result would be similar to this water test you had and could easily create a bad reaction.”

Thanks Lita that is really interesting.

It is always intriguing to hear about different things that bring on vertigo attacks. You have wonder why the water has an effect inside the ear for some folks and not others.

I had my first vertigo episode after putting a fair amount of pressure against the ear that has the other Meniere's symptoms. It also happened after the ENT doctor cleaned the wax out of it which also put pressure in my ear.

After my labyrinthectomy surgery, I began having vertigo and nausea again when my affected ear developed some inflammation. I guess anything that applies pressure in the middle ear can have that effect? And it wouldn't surprise me if anyone who has Meniere's is particularly prone to this effect.

I've went back & forth deciding rather I should use a neti pot. The sinus/head congestion I get make it very tempting & in theory seems like it would do wonders for me. But some how I just havent gave it a try.

OK since for once I'm actually conversing with like "eared" understanding folks I'll admit the idea scares the heck out of me.

Any other experiences on using one?

David, I have tried using something similar ONCE its still salt water only its a squeeze type bottle & I assume it forces H2O on thru the passages. Crazy contraption my mother has & last month during my never ending meniere's attack my TMJ decides to flare up big time & my sinus gets congested so mom cant take me being in agony any longer & persuades me to use this thing. My "good" side went fair, then my right not so much. NO water would go what so ever regardless of how mom titled my head. She concluded that I was badly congested on that side I concluded my nose had more sense & clamped shut. What little went thru the 1 side did seem to help. At least my spin reverted to my normal direction & I was able to function.

To use a saline flush or NOT, that is the question? I battle this decision often. I used to use a saline rinse fom my allergies and sinuses all the time - Almost daily. Then my Meniers flared last year after 4 years of respite and has not gone away. Since then, I have sparingly used it, because sometime I think it makes things slightly worse. The saline rinse works well to clear debri from sinuses and does help, but at the same time it can force salt water into the Eustation Tube and into the middle ear area.

The answer probably lies in between. IF your sinus congestion and allergies are severe and the mucous from it is blocking the E tube, then using a saline rinse should help. Especially if it thins out some of the inner ear fluid caused by allergic inflamation. Helpful if your Meniers is thought to be caused by autoimmine imflamation. IF the rinse causes salt water to get into you middle ear, this potentially could exacerbate things. Problem if your Meniers is thought to be caused by blocked or decrease drainage of fluid. According to ENT physicians, the saline rinse should be isotonic to your body so the salt should not be absorbed.

Thought I'd let you know I have fallen in LOVE with Neti Pot lol. Seems like I've been using it almost daily. It's probably just a mental think but I dont feel as "full". Hasnt added any new sound effects or thrown me into an attack Yet.

My MD is caused by excessive fluid.

i don't use the neti pot that often. i got a cold the other day and decided to use it since i know people use it as a remedy. about an hour after i used it, i got so dizzy. i think i'm experiencing vertigo. it's been off and on for about two days now and i'm starting to get worried. what can i do? is there any over the counter medication or yoga poses that i can do to help with this?

hi AB,
I would check with your doctor to find out what what exactly is making you dizzy. It might be more than just the neti pot.
good luck
